Tim Bowness - Lost in the Ghost Light

Our CD of the month is Lost in the Ghost Light, fourth studio album of the English singer and songwriter Tim Bowness. Since 1987, Tim has been part of the band Bo-Man that was founded along with Steven Wilson in 1987. Other side projects of the artist include his collaboration with bands such as Centrozoom, Darkroom, Henry Fool, Memories of Machines and Nosound. In 2004 the artist released, under the label One Little Indian, his first solo album, titled My Hotel Year. Featuring Roger Eno and Hugh Hopper, amongst others, the album was well received by critics and fans alike. Ten years later Bowness released, on Inside Out Music, his second solo album, Abandoned Dancehall Dreams. The album, mixed by Steven Wilson and featuring Colin Edwin, Pat Mastelotto Andrew Keeling, Richard Barbieri and Grasscut, earned stellar reviews and performed well commercially reaching No. 18 in the UK Rock charts and the top spot in Prog Magazine’s July and August 2014 charts. One year later the artist released, under the label Inside Out Music, a follow-up to Abandoned Dancehall Dreams, titled Stupid Things That Mean The World. The album was mixed by Pineapple Thief founder Bruce Soord and featured Peter Hammill, Colin Edwin, Phil Manzanera and David Rhodes. This new effort by Tim managed to surpass, in terms of critics and commercial success, the previous album. In February 2017 the artist released his fourth album, Lost in the Ghost Light. This new release was mixed by Steven Wilson and featured Bruce Soord, Colin Edwin, Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson and Camel’s Kit Watkins. Acclaimed by critics the album fared very well commercially reaching No. 5 in the UK Rock Chart and No. 8 in the official UK Progressive Chart.

Tim Bowness - Lost in the Ghost Light

Lost in the Ghost Light is a concept album that revolves around the thoughts of a veteran musician. In terms of musical approach, the album is way more proggy than the previous releases by the the artist. Very remiscent of the soundscapes conjured by mid-70 Genesis not only the album might be seen as a testament to a musical genre slowly disappearing but also to the artist’s own musical journey. “Distant Summers” one of the highlights of this outstanding album provides a precise tease over the artist’s past:

“Once you had vision, played the music of your dreams”, “No weight of expectation, just joy in what you found”, “Wearing the styles of your age, a slave to the whims of a phase”

Other standout tracks include Moonshot Manchild and You Wanted To be Seen. In the end “Lost in the Ghost Light, is an old-fashioned masterpiece probably the best Tim Bowness’ effort to date. Prog rock fans will love it. Perfect tunes to paddle by!
